Visbeck Manor
Haus Visbeck near Dülmen is a former manor house, of which parts of the buildings and the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) still exist today.
As early as 1186, the house was mentioned as Villa Visbeck as a feudal estate in the Urbarium of Werden Abbey. Since 1338, the Lords of Visbeck are found as owners of the complex, now used as a manor house – a fortified building on two islands. The lineage of the Lords of Visbeck died out in 1540, and with that, the buildings found other owners, most recently the Droste-Vischering family, who owned it until the 20th century.
The Marienkapelle dates from the 18th century and is thus significantly younger than Haus Visbeck itself. Its architect was Johann Conrad Schlaun.
Today it is in private ownership and is used for horse breeding and partly as a holiday apartment.
Haus Visbeck is located southeast of the city of Dülmen near the federal highway B 474. It belongs to the parish of Dülmen and is located in the Daldrup farming community.
Surroundings+
In the immediate vicinity of Haus Visbeck are two remarkable sites:
- The former nuclear weapons site, the Dülmen-Visbeck Special Ammunition Depot, which today serves as a storage facility for fireworks. In the 1980s, the depot was often a target of the peace movement. Construction of the depot began on April 25, 1963, and was completed on September 22, 1965.
- The former shooting and testing range of the Krupp'sche Gussstahl-Fabrik (Krupp Cast Steel Factory) from Essen. The shooting range was the first shooting range built by a private individual – Alfred Krupp – but was only in operation for a few years. It was opened in 1873 but was no longer used by 1878. It had become too small. By 1887, all properties had finally been sold off again. From the shooting range, two embankments of laboratories are still clearly visible.
