Sandfort Manor

The origin of the manor house lies in an old residential tower, which was built in the 13th century. From 1760-65, the present manor house was built, which was renovated in 1808.

The "Stone House" is the oldest part of the manor house and was built in the 13th century as a residential tower. It is a three-story stone building with a hipped roof. The walls are up to 1.5 meters thick and consist of quarry stone masonry. The windows are small and have stone frames. On the ground floor there is a large hall, which was used for representative purposes. On the upper floors there were living and sleeping quarters. The "Stone House" was originally surrounded by a moat and a curtain wall.

In the years 1760-65, the manor house was extended by a new building. This is a two-story baroque building with a mansard roof. The facade is structured by pilasters and cornices. The windows are larger than those of the "Stone House" and have wooden frames. On the ground floor there is a large hall, which was used for festivities. On the upper floor there were living and sleeping quarters. The new building is connected to the "Stone House" by a connecting building.

In 1808, the manor house was renovated. The renovation mainly affected the interior of the building. The rooms were redesigned and new furniture was purchased. The facade was also repainted. The renovation gave the manor house its present appearance.

Today, the manor house is privately owned and is used for residential purposes. It is not open to the public. The manor house is a listed building and is considered an important example of baroque architecture in Hesse.

The Park

The manor house is surrounded by a large park. The park was laid out in the 18th century and has an area of about 5 hectares. It is designed in the style of an English landscape garden and has numerous trees, shrubs and flowers. In the park there is also a small pond and a chapel. The park is open to the public and is a popular destination for walks.
