Rosendahl Castle

The location of Haus Rosendal was not accidental. Here, where the road from Goch via Hasselt to Emmerich crossed the narrowest point of the marsh, which separates the Hasselt geest from the terminal moraine, this old road also intersected the double landwehr laid out by Count Adolf von Kleve around the year 1400 at the foot of the hill. The name can be traced back to an old burial ground on the northern edge of the heath, where the Romans used to plant roses on their graves. Haus Rosendal has been owned by the von der Mosel family for centuries. The agricultural estate and castle are inhabited and can only be viewed from the outside.

Rosendal Estate

Haus Rosendal is a special sight. The noble house emerged from a stone keep built shortly before 1433. The last renovation of the house took place in 1797. The Duke of Kleve, Johann III (1521-1539), freed the Rosendal estate in the Kleve Forest from services and taxes. This privilege was granted to the then owner of Rosendal, Luef von Osterwyck, as a long-standing head of the Kleve Chamber of Accounts.

On March 5, 1706, the then Lieutenant Colonel Konrad Wilhelm von der Mosel (1664-1733) acquired the Rosendal estate from the Osterwyck family for 12,000 Thalers. Rosendal presumably served the von der Mosel family - resident in the village of Mosel in southern Saxony since 1200 - primarily as a summer residence. Haus Rosendal is one of the few well-preserved manor houses from the time of the Dukes of Kleve and has significantly contributed to the development of Hasselt.
