Mallinckrodt Manor
Haus Mallinckrodt is a former knight's estate and current manor house on the western slope of the Ardey Mountains. It is located in a forest above the Ruhr Valley in the Ende (Gedern) district of the Westphalian city of Herdecke and is often referred to as Schloss Mallinckrodt due to its imposing architecture.
Around 1241, the castle complex was still called "Mesekenwerke". Its inhabitants later called themselves von Mallinckrodt. It was a fief of the Counts of Volmarstein, then of the Counts of Mark.
Around 1446, the castle was burned down by Dietrich II von Moers. In 1619, the castle burned down again.
In 1896, the complex was acquired by the banker Hans Jordan and rebuilt in the Flemish Gothic style in 1903/04. Only one tower remained of the old castle.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the artist Fritz Gärtner stayed at the now listed castle for several years and had set up his studio in the garden house.
A little further north in the forest is the private cemetery of the Jordan family.
Tourism+
Privately owned and inhabited by several tenants, the Haus Mallinckrodt complex has limited access. There is no direct public vehicle access or parking. However, the driveway to the entrance of the complex is freely accessible for hikers, and the hiking trail of the Ruhrhöhenweg and Westfalenwanderweg runs only a few hundred meters past the castle grounds in the forest, although the turn-off is not signposted. The complex can be visited by prior arrangement.
