Ittlingen Castle

Haus Itlingen is located in the Herbern district of Ascheberg in Münsterland. It is 1.5 kilometers from Haus Venne in Drensteinfurt on the L671.

Haus Itlingen cannot be clearly classified as a castle or a fortress. It is alternately referred to as a moated castle or a water fortress. Alternative names tend to emphasize its castle character: Schloss Itlingen, Schloss im Grünen (Castle in the Green), or Dornröschenschloss (Sleeping Beauty Castle).

The first documented mention of the estate dates back to the 14th century. Haus Itlingen originally belonged to the Lords, who were probably already settled there around 1300. Through marriage, it came into the hands of the Westphalian ancient noble family of von Nagel in 1540, in whose possession it remains today. Around 1680, Ferdinand von Nagel had the current castle built. In the 18th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and received its horseshoe shape (a central building with two wings), with round towers forming the end of its outer flanks.

Even today, the castle estate is still owned by the family, namely by Hermann Freiherr von Nagel. The father of the current owner was the famous international show jumper "Hermann Freiherr von Nagel", who won many Nations Cups with his horse "Wotan" before World War II. The riding and driving club in Herbern is named after the famous rider.
