Hove Manor

Haus Hove is a former manor house in Oberwengern, in the Volmarstein district of Wetter (Ruhr) in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex consists of several buildings and is located near the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Wetter.

The historical parts of the ensemble are listed as architectural monument No. 73 in the monument list of Wetter.

The origins of Haus Hove probably date back to the 14th century. At that time, the manor grounds were first granted to the Lords of Altena and von Velmede. In the first documented mention around 1342, Hove was designated as a dower for the widow of Dietrich von Altena.

On December 23, 1399, the feudal charter for Dietrich von Velmede was issued by the Archbishop of Cologne at Arnsberg Castle.

From 1820, Hoffmann von Fallersleben, the poet of the Deutschlandlied, stayed at Haus Hove seven times. He visited the family of his childhood friend Henriette von Schwachenberg.

After a fire in 1871 or 1872, the residential building was rebuilt between 1920 and 1922. Preserved older parts of the complex are the so-called sheepfold and the round tower.

Due to architectural blunders, presumably from the 1970s, the view of the manor house from most sides is blocked by residential buildings, so that the architectural charm of the buildings often escapes even locals.
