Daren Castle
Daren House, built in its current form in 1752 by Georg Wilhelm Freiherr von Frydag. Bakum, that is primarily a history of farmers, nobility, and the church. The first documented farmhouses were located in 890 in what is now Elmelage and Hausstette, and around 970 in what is now Carum. In the 11th century, the name Becheim first appeared, from which today's Bakum later developed.
By the 13th century, Bakum had developed into the wealthiest municipality in Southern Oldenburg, with a total of 9 noble estates. Among the noble seats was the Lohburg fortress of the von Schagen family. As a robber knight's castle, surrounded by a swampy and impassable low-lying area, it enjoyed a dubious reputation. It was destroyed in 1374 by the troops of Bishop Florenz von Münster. The coat of arms of the municipality of Bakum today points to the most powerful noble families of Sutholte and von Schagen. An epitaph of the Voß family, still visible in the tower of Bakum Church, provides a testament to Bakum's noble history.
With the exception of Daren Estate, all Bakum noble estates passed into peasant ownership during the last 100 years. What remains to this day are stories and tales, for example, that of the Lying Baron Münchhausen, who is said to have performed his famous equestrian feat on the grand staircase of Daren House.
