Busch Manor

Busch Manor

To be privately owned

Haus Busch is located on the eastern edge of Niederelvenich in the direction of Wichterich, both districts of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia, on today's Landesstraße 162 in the Rotbachaue.

Haus Busch is a single-part moated castle situated on a regular island and used as an agricultural farm.

It is considered certain that Haus Busch was a former Prüm feudal court. When the castle was built cannot be determined with certainty. In the 15th century, the castle passed from the Beissel von Gymnich to Michael von Bongart. His sister Katharina inherited the property in 1545. She called herself Hall zum Busch, which became the namesake for the castle. In 1692, the widowed Maria von Groote bought the electoral Cologne knight's seat, which was eligible for the Landtag. Her son Ferdinand began the ambitious expansion of the medieval castle into a baroque country estate in 1700. He died in Turin in 1742; the construction project remained unfinished. His niece Maria Jakobe inherited the unfinished house, from whom it passed in 1778 to the von Geyr zu Müddersheim family, who were related to the Grootes. In 1815, the Barons von Mylius and the Barons von Pranghe were joint owners. The later sole owner von Mylius sold the property in the mid-20th century to the bourgeois Radermacher family. Today, the property belongs to the Cologne art auctioneer Professor Hendrik Hanstein. He made Haus Busch a socially acceptable country estate once again.

Through the gate, which was formerly accessible by a drawbridge, one now sees a modern barn, beneath which are the cellar vaults of the medieval castle house. A small corner tower and remnants of the castle walls and bailey can be seen at the southeast corner. The outer bailey was completed by Ferdinand vom Groote shortly before his death.

Haus Busch was entered into the monument list of the city of Zülpich on April 13, 1983, under number 26.
