Attenbach Castle

Haus Attenbach is a former noble residence on the left bank of the Sieg in Hennef in the Rhein-Sieg district and gives its name to the district in which it stands. The two-story building with its two round corner towers belongs to the type of lowland castle due to its location. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.

The exact founding date of the castle complex is not yet known, as detailed written sources are not yet available. The place name Attenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1142 in the property register of Nonnenwerth Monastery (other sources report an earlier mention in 1126 in the foundation charter of the abbey). In 1367, it is attested that the then owner, Knight Johann von Attenbach, named himself after his castle.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the complex came into the possession of Arnold von Vünfzahl (also von Fünfzahl and von Vonfzahl), whose heiress daughter Maria married Wilhelm von Gevertzhagen and brought the castle into the marriage. In 1545, the couple had the present manor house built on the site of the late medieval complex, which is evidenced by a year number above the doorframe of the entrance next to the double coat of arms Gevertzhagen-Vünfzahl.

In 1810, the castle was sold to Baron Theodor von Hallberg-Broich, who sold the house in 1817 to Matthias Heister zu Menden.
