Weßnig Manor

The history of Weßnig Castle is closely linked to the history of the village of Weßnig itself. The first documented mention of a person associated with the later castle site dates back to 1215, when Otto von Wehsenig was mentioned as a vassal of the Vogt of Ileburg. This indicates an early feudal structure in the region.

The village of Weßnig itself was first mentioned in a document in 1330. This marks the official beginning of the documented history of the locality, which would later become home to the castle.

The 20th century brought significant changes for Weßnig Castle. In 1945, the castle was expropriated as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone. This marked the end of private ownership of the castle for a long time.

After a period of various uses, the castle found a new purpose in November 2003 when it began to be used as a primary school. This new use ensures the preservation of the historic building and integrates it into the community life of Weßnig.
