Sohlen Manor

The Sohlen Manor is a former knight's estate in the Beyendorf-Sohlen district, which belongs to the city of Magdeburg. The preserved manor house is a listed building.

The property, located at Dodendorfer Weg 12 in the Sohlen district, was part of the Schaeper knight's estate. It was built in 1908 by architect Baljes. From 1917, the Willishof settlement in the Westerhüsen area, operated as an outwork, also temporarily belonged to the estate.

After the expropriation and expulsion of the landlords by the communists in 1945, the manor house served as a school from 1946 until the 1990s. It is currently in use as a socio-cultural center. Local history exhibitions are housed on the upper floor.

The building was constructed as a one-and-a-half-story, wide, plastered building. Standing on a high plinth, the house is characterized by a large mansard roof with dormer windows. The entrance area is designed similarly to a portico. On the rear side, facing the manor park, there is a terrace with a two-flight staircase. Major renovations took place in 1978. In particular, a rear extension was built, which was later demolished. The original situation of the garden exit was restored in a more modern form. There are some Art Nouveau ornaments on the building. The plaster of the manor house is roughcast, and the window frames are smooth plaster.

The manor house was surrounded by an extensive park, parts of which have been preserved. In one park area, the landlord had established horticultural use with greenhouses. After the expropriation, this area was parceled out and leased. However, with the restructuring of agriculture, the areas remained unused for a long time. In 1981/82, these areas were prepared as garden plots and built with bungalows. After 1990, a conversion into a single-family housing estate called Froschgund took place.

To the right of the manor house, a monument to Ernst Thälmann from the time of its use as a school still stands, as well as a signpost with directions to distant places.
