Schwiessel Manor

The (old) Schwiessel Manor House is a manor house built between 1732 and 1735 as a Baroque half-timbered house in the Schwiessel district of the municipality of Prebberede in the Rostock district (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).

In the 14th century, the Schwiessel estate was owned by the noble family von Negendanck. In 1561, Joachim von Negendanck sold the property to Dietrich von Bevernest. In 1667, the estate again fell to the Negendanck family. In 1732, Berthold Diedrich von Negendanck sold Schwiessel to Hans Heinrich von Levetzow.

Hans Heinrich von Levetzow and his wife Anna Dorothea von Plessen (from the House of Gottesgabe) had their manor house built in half-timbered style between 1732 and 1735 on the remaining foundations of a 13th-century house; the alliance coat of arms of the Plessen and Levetzows above the entrance portal still commemorates the building family of the house today.

Field Marshal Johann Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn became lord of the manor of Schwiessel in 1782; in 1838, the Mecklenburg-Schwerin chamberlain Adolph Christian Ulrich von Bassewitz was enfeoffed with the estate. In the 1860s, Henning von Bassewitz had a new castle-like manor house built in Tudor style on the estate; from this time on, the old half-timbered manor house was used as the estate manager's house. Until their forced expropriation and expulsion by the communists in 1945, the Schwiessel estate remained the property of the von Bassewitz family.

The new manor house is currently being rebuilt, and the old Schwiessel Manor House was already authentically restored by a private owner starting in 1996. Today it houses a hunting school and a guesthouse.

The historic half-timbered manor house from 1735 and the construction site of the new Schwiessel manor house are surrounded by an estate park, which was laid out about 200 years ago on an area of six hectares.
