Mahrenholzhof Manor

The Mahrenholzhof is a listed former farm in the Fermersleben district of Magdeburg.

The farm complex, for which the spelling Mahrenholtzhof is also common, is located on the eastern side of the former village of Fermersleben, facing the Elbe, not far from the Martin-Gallus-Kirche in Mansfelder Straße. Of the originally very large farm, the historic manor house, a residential tower incorporated therein, and the farm entrance have largely been preserved. The farm was owned by the influential and wealthy Mahrenholtz family for over three centuries and is one of the few surviving testimonies of the pre-industrial era in the district, which was later heavily shaped by industrial enterprises. The nearby Mahrenholtzstraße is named after the family.

The oldest component is the residential tower, which possibly dates from the 13th or 14th century. Other sources suggest the year 1530. The tower has three floors, which are only accessible from the residential house adjoining to the east, which incorporates the tower. The tower is crowned by two offset gable roofs, so that the tower has a gable on each side. The wall thicknesses of the tower, built on a rectangular floor plan, are 1.40 meters at the base and still 0.80 meters in the upper area. The floor slabs are designed as flat ceilings. A sundial is located on the southwest corner of the tower.

The manor house was built in 1695 according to an inscription, but its core may be even older. It was built of bricks and is plastered. The manor house is divided into two parts, each with a gable roof, whose gables face the street to the east. The two-story main part adjoins directly to the tower. It has a dormer and is four-axis. To the east of the main part adjoins the smaller, single-story ancillary house with only two axes.

In 1878, the manor house was rebuilt. It received larger windows. Inside, a large wooden spiral staircase leads from the hall to the upper floor. In 1916, the then owner Heinrich Böwe applied for permission to set up a cinematograph theater. In fact, a cinema with 347 folding seats was established for some time in a barn to the right of the gate passage. The manor house and tower were renovated at the beginning of the 21st century.

South of the manor house is the gate entrance. It was built of quarry stone and is also plastered. To the right of the gate entrance and above the entrance door are inscriptions referring to the Mahrenholtz family.
