Kaufungen Manor

A manor house was built around 1170 by the Lords of Kauffungen. The noble family was first mentioned in a document in 1226. Before 1455, the estate was owned by the knight Kunz von Kauffungen. He wanted to enforce compensation claims from the Brothers' War between the Electors and Duke Wilhelm (1446 - 1451) and therefore kidnapped the Elector's sons. The attempt failed and the knight was beheaded on July 14, 1455, in Freiberg's Obermarkt. Thereupon, the manor house was destroyed and a castle was built on the same spot, of which today only two wings remain. Later, ownership passed to the von Malitz family, who managed the estate until 1566. In 1584, ownership passed to Loth von Thumbshirn, who expanded the castle in 1595 and 1610. After this, ownership changed in 1684 to the Lords von der Planit and in 1766 to Count Detlev Carl von Einsiedel. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.
