Borgwedde Manor

The history of the castle at the sacred grove dates back a long way. In the middle of the 11th century, it is mentioned in the tithe roll of Freckenhorst Monastery. In 1090, it is listed as a fief of the Osnabrück Church. The predecessor buildings of the moated manor house were rebuilt after fires over the centuries. Today, a curved grand staircase leads into the 13-axis manor house, rebuilt in 1909 in the Neoclassical style. The adjacent two-story poultry house is a rarity.
In 1353, the Lords of Bar came into possession of the allodial, noble estate and the associated legal titles: the forest countships of Venne and Icker, hunting rights in the districts of Vörden and Hunteburg as well as the parishes of Belm, Rulle, and Wallenhorst, asserted burgmann rights concerning the Venne Church. Also the Gogericht (lower court) in Ostercappeln and on the Angelbecke. In the following centuries, members of the families Bar-Stockum, von Hitzfeld, von Prenger, von Bar-Barenaue, Schrader, and for over 180 years now, the Beckmann family, have been among the owners.
The poultry house, in the style of English garden culture, is a two-story cuboid with an octagonal half-timbered tower attachment. In Germany, there are only two buildings of this type, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Extensively restored with public funds, the building now serves as an office building. The stable building was once built in the Middle Franconian architectural style.
The estate also includes the Borgwedder Mill. It is mentioned on January 30, 1499, as part of the noble allodial estate of Borgwedde in the parish of Venne. In 1823, the mill was rebuilt. Since 1994, the mill building has been renovated with great attention to detail. Funds from village renewal were also used for this purpose.
