Bertkow Manor

Bertkow was first mentioned in 1240. The place name "bartkow" from 1496 probably comes from Wendish. The word "bartnek" means "beekeeper". The syllable "kowe" stands for "dwelling, hut". Old writings speak of Alt-Bertkow, a Rundling village around the church with two knightly estates. One knightly estate is the manor house, or "Castle of Bertkow". The building, erected in the 18th century, has been continuously renovated since 1996. It no longer shows any signs of having survived a major fire. The two knightly estates were later united into one. In old writings around 1225, the name Otto von Bertkow also appears. He was the head of the Bertkow family, who owned the manor house until 1804.
