Barkow Manor

Barkow Manor House is the manor house of the former estate in Barkow near Plau am See. Barkow is a district of the municipality of Barkhagen.

Barkow Manor House is a single-storey building with a two-storey mansard roof. On the south side, it features a dormer that rises above the entrance porch. The building was constructed in 1913 by the Hülße family, designed by an architect Schmuck from Hamburg. It replaced the previous building from the 18th century. This house was a half-timbered building in the style of farmhouses, similar to the rectory in Barkow that still exists today. The new building was not oriented to the farmstead to the west like its predecessor, but to the south.

The Barkow estate was a sovereign domain, which was given in hereditary lease in the 1860s. After a few years, the farm came into the possession of the Bethge family in 1874 and later passed to the related Hülße family. In 1945, in the course of the so-called land reform, the family was dispossessed and expelled. The manor house then served as refugee accommodation and was placed on the list of manor houses designated for demolition by the state government (in accordance with SMAD Order No. 209). However, at the instigation of Barkow residents, it was used as a school from 1949. After the school closed in the mid-1970s, it was used, among other things, as a holiday home, Konsum (cooperative store), and LPG (agricultural production cooperative) office. In 1992, the Hülße family was able to reacquire the manor house and renovated it. Since then, it has served as a hotel.

At the beginning of 2003, a roof fire occurred due to a technical defect, in which the upper attic completely burned out. Thanks to the efforts of several fire brigades with over 60 emergency personnel, the spread of the fire to the rest of the building was prevented, but large parts of the manor house were nevertheless affected by fire and extinguishing water. After the subsequent renewed renovation and modernization, the hotel was reopened.
