Altfresenburg Manor

Fresenburg dates back to a Slavic castle of the 8th century. However, it was first mentioned in a document in 1263 as a noble estate, which included not only the farms of Alt- and Neufresenburg, Poggensee and Schadehorn, but also the villages of Poggensee and Seefeld. In 1544, the estate owner Bartholomäus von Ahlefeld settled Mennonites, who had fled religious persecution in their homeland, in Schadehorn. Menno Simons also found a home here. His residence, the Mennokate, can still be visited today. In 1710, the von Buchwaldt family bought the estate. In 1791, Hugo von Buchwaldt had the still existing manor house built by Christian Frederik Hansen. Serfdom was only abolished in 1804. With the introduction of the Prussian municipal constitution in 1889, the estate district, together with the Blumendorf estate district, formed the Fresenburg administrative district. When the estate districts were dissolved, Fresenburg was incorporated into Bad Oldesloe in 1928; at that time it had 638 inhabitants. During the land reform after the Second World War, large parts of the former estate grounds were settled.
