Galkhausen Manor

From 1897, the estate of the current Rheinische Kliniken was the building site for the 6th Provincial Asylum, as the hospital was once called. The estate forms the locality of Galkhausen in Reusrath and represents one of the oldest settlement sites in Langenfeld. The first documented mention of the estate occurred in 1347. A mention around 1440 in a document from Altenberg Monastery occurs incidentally in the course of a land transaction at Berenbroich. By 1442, the farm was in the possession of the Soutmann couple, as they exchanged it, among other things, for 17.5 acres of arable land in Neurath. At this time, the condition of the farm was described as "unbuilt and desolate". In 1466, the farm came into the possession of the von Etzbach family through purchase, and in 1829, it passed to Baron Johann Wilhelm von Mirbach zu Harff. In 1816, 13 inhabitants were recorded for the estate.

The manor of the Rheinische Kliniken, with the institution's church, which is also a listed building, continued to be used for agriculture after the hospital was built from 1900 to 1971. In the war and post-war years, the manor largely supplied the hospital itself with its yields from livestock farming and vegetable cultivation. After the closure of the farm, an occupational therapy use of the farm premises for the treatment of patients was operated in the 1980s, and the farm was converted to biodynamic horticulture (inauguration: June 3, 1987). Sheep farming was finally discontinued in 2001. After extensive renovation and refurbishment in 2004-2005, the building now serves as a modern therapy center and houses several service operations of the clinic as well as a small museum.
