Güstrow Cathedral

The collegiate church in Güstrow was founded on June 3, 1226, by the Mecklenburg Prince Heinrich Borwin II. Following his early death and that of his father Heinrich Borwin I, construction of the church began under Nikolaus von Werle and it was consecrated to Saint Cecilia. The erection of the two rectangular choir bays started in the third quarter of the 13th century. The nave with its ribbed vaults was completed around 1292. In the early 14th century, the choir was extended with its polygonal apse, which was re-consecrated in 1335. The west tower was finished in 1420, followed by the chapel rows in the 14th century. With the Reformation in 1552, the collegiate church was dissolved, and the church fell into disrepair. Duchess Elisabeth initiated a two-year restoration and conversion into a Protestant place of worship starting in 1565. Duke Ulrich later furnished the church with significant monuments, including the epitaph for Heinrich Borwin II and the monumental Duke Ulrich Monument.

Today, Güstrow Cathedral serves as the church for the Evangelical-Lutheran Cathedral Parish. It is a protected architectural monument and houses rich furnishings from the 15th and 16th centuries, including the Güstrow Apostles and a winged altar. Particularly noteworthy is Ernst Barlach's sculpture "The Hovering," a replica made in 1952 of the original destroyed during World War II.
