Grand Ducal Palace

The Grand Ducal Palace was built in 1587 as the official residence of the Margraves of Baden. Until 1689, it was used intermittently as the seat of the Oberamt. In 1727, the official residence was moved to Müllheim. From 1887 to 1888, under Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, the palace was converted into the Grand Ducal Baden Summer Residence. The conversion was carried out by court architect Friedrich Hemberger in the Neo-Renaissance style. The accompanying palace park was laid out by the grand ducal court gardener Ernst Krautinger. The palace remained the property of the House of Baden until 1952, after which it became the property of the municipality of Badenweiler and today houses various art exhibitions.
