The historical boundary stones bearing the coats of arms of Langheim Monastery delineate former property lines of the erstwhile Cistercian abbey. Protected as a historical monument in Bavaria, they bear witness to the territorial expansion and significance of the monastery in the region around Lichtenfels.

History+

These boundary stones are silent witnesses to the history of Langheim Monastery, which was once among the most influential Cistercian abbeys in Franconia. Their placement with the monastic coat of arms served to clearly identify monastic property and demarcate it from neighboring lordships. This practice was common in the Middle Ages and early modern period to visibly establish property rights and prevent disputes.

Location+

The boundary stones are situated within the municipality of Lichtenfels in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. They are integrated into the landscape and distributed throughout the former sphere of influence of Langheim Monastery.

On site+

Today, the boundary stones are designated as architectural monuments and are under protection. They have been preserved in their original state and offer insight into historical land surveying and the territorial organization of past centuries.
