Border Museum Schifflersgrund
The Border Museum Schifflersgrund was one of the first of its kind in the reunited Federal Republic, aiming to preserve some historically significant fragments of the former inner-German border and make them accessible to posterity.
The current Border Museum Schifflersgrund is located on the former inner-German border between Hesse and Thuringia. It lies on a piece of land that was assigned to the former Soviet Occupation Zone (later GDR) in 1945 as part of the Wanfried Agreement. Therefore, the site of the documentation center is today part of the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld, but historically, the area belongs neither to Thuringia nor to the historical region of Eichsfeld, but to Hesse. The museum is housed in various buildings, some of which served as border buildings on the GDR side in the region.
The museum was opened on October 3, 1991, and has been under the patronage of the "Arbeitskreis Grenzinformation e.V." (Association for Border Information, registered association) (headquarters: Bad Sooden-Allendorf) since its inception. The management is overseen by the 1st chairman of the association, Wolfgang Ruske, who is also the initiator of the working group and the museum complex. Since then, the museum has grown piece by piece and has collected exhibits of all kinds over the years on the topics of the German-German border, life in the restricted area, and region-specific peculiarities.

The museum provides information in seven sections on the topics of the end of the war, the development of the occupation zones, life in the restricted area, and developments in the GDR in 1989. Two areas address region-specific aspects, such as the Wanfried Agreement and the death of Heinz Josef Grosse. Grosse was shot dead by two border soldiers during an escape attempt on March 29, 1982. The crime scene is located on the grounds of the current museum, which thus also serves as a place of remembrance for this history.
