Border Museum Mödlareuth

The Mödlareuth Open-Air Museum is an open-air museum in Mödlareuth, a village divided by the former inner-German border.

During the period of divided Germany, the small village of Mödlareuth was bisected by the inner-German border and thus border installations, including the wall. As a symbol of separation, the village was also known as Little Berlin. The museum incorporates a section of the actual border.

Arndt Schaffner (1946–2007) from Münchberg, along with Töpen mayor Arnold Friedrich, is considered one of the initiators of the museum's founding. Schaffner was the first chairman of the Deutsch-Deutsches Museum Mödlareuth e. V. association and subsequently its managing director. In 1999, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

In its exhibition rooms, the museum provides an overview of the border situation, including the fates of separated families and individuals who attempted to flee across the border. Vehicles of the border authorities from both sides are on display. In addition to the actual border fortifications, the open-air area shows exemplary further apparatus and fortifications that were intended to prevent crossing the border during the various construction phases.
