Graf-Lodronscher Sekundogeniturpalace

The Paris-Lodron Sekundogeniturpalast (Palace of the Second Line) was built in the 17th century and is the predecessor building, now only existing in remnants, of a structure planned by the architect Paul Geppert (1875–1965) on Mirabellplatz in Salzburg, Mirabellplatz 8. The house is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg.

After Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron had drained the Schallmoos and Itzlinger Moos and moved the city wall eastward in 1632, a large undeveloped area emerged in the vicinity of today's Andräviertel. It proved difficult to settle this new town. Therefore, the Archbishop decided to settle his own family there. In 1643, he handed over part of the land to his brother Christoph von Lodron as a primogeniture fideicommissum. In addition, he established a secundogeniture for his sisters Barbara Countess Liechtenstein and Eleonore Countess Spaun. For them, he had the Sekundogeniturpalast built. This was a three-story building with two entrance gates, a rear garden, and two other buildings for administrators and servants.

This former residence of the second line of the Lodron family fell victim to the city fire of 1818. The burnt-out ruin was not removed for a long time; in 1848, there were still reports of the ruins of the Sekundogeniturpalast.

From the ruin, the inn "Zum Krebsen" (To the Crayfish) emerged, later "Zum roten Krebs" (To the Red Crayfish). This establishment with an outdoor seating area developed into a popular meeting place for artists and writers (e.g., Georg Trakl).

In 1908, the house was completely rebuilt by Paul Geppert, incorporating Art Nouveau elements into the facade design. In 1938, the registration office of the German Wehrmacht moved in here. After the Second World War, the hotel was downsized and finally closed completely. Today, a number of individual shops and, among others, a four-star boutique hotel of the Austrotels hotel group are housed in the building. In the basement, the restaurant "Zum Krebsenkeller" still commemorates the recent past.

An entrance gate to the inner courtyard, crowned by the coat of arms of Paris Lodron, still points to the Sekundogeniturpalast.
