Freiberg Cathedral

The origins of the cathedral date back to approximately 1180, when a Romanesque basilica was erected in Freiberg. This parish church was early adorned with important artworks such as the Triumphal Cross Group (around 1225) and the Golden Portal (around 1230). In 1480, it was elevated to the status of a collegiate foundation, which, however, was dissolved 57 years later during the Reformation. A devastating city fire in 1484 almost completely destroyed the church, though the Triumphal Cross Group, the Golden Portal, and parts of the choir survived. On the same site, the cathedral was rebuilt as a late Gothic hall church under the direction of master builders J. and B. Falkenwalt. Its re-consecration took place in 1512. Between 1585 and 1594, the choir was transformed into the burial site for the Wettin dynasty under Giovanni Maria Nosseni. Plans for church towers around 1905 were thwarted by the First World War, preserving the cathedral's late Gothic character. A comprehensive restoration was carried out in 1971.

Today, Freiberg Cathedral serves as an Evangelical-Lutheran church and remains an active cultural monument. It continues to house significant artworks such as the Golden Portal, the Tulip Pulpit, organs by Gottfried Silbermann, and the choir section transformed into the burial place for the Albertine line.
