Frauenkirche

The origins of the Frauenkirche date back to 1240, when the Wittelsbach dynasty erected a church on the outskirts of their residence, which received parish rights in 1271. In the late 15th century, likely due to population growth and the increased self-confidence of Munich's citizens, a new construction was decided. Jörg von Halsbach, who also built the old Munich Town Hall, was commissioned with the design. The foundation stone for the late Gothic brick building was laid on February 9, 1468. Construction progressed rapidly, and the towers were completed by 1488. However, the characteristic onion domes were only added around 1525. Over the centuries, the church underwent numerous transformations, including a Baroque redesign starting in 1601 and a purification in the 19th century, which removed many Baroque elements. During World War II, the cathedral was severely damaged in 1944, with parts of the hall vault collapsing. Reconstruction took place in the post-war years in a simple form and has been renovated several times, most recently in 1994.

The Frauenkirche is located in Munich's Old Town, within the city area of Munich, in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 553 meters above sea level.

Today, the Frauenkirche is an active sacred building and can be visited by the public. The south tower was previously accessible for ascents but has been closed since 2012 due to maintenance work.
