French Cathedral
The French Cathedral in Berlin, a prominent example of Neoclassical architecture, significantly shapes the cityscape of the capital. It is a cathedral of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia and is protected as a cultural monument. The origins of the French Cathedral date back to 1701, when construction of the French Friedrichstadt Church began. However, the distinctive domed tower, now known as the French Cathedral, was only added to the existing church between 1780 and 1785. King Frederick II of Prussia commissioned Carl von Gontard to erect this Baroque structure to enhance the grandeur of Gendarmenmarkt. The term "Dom" here does not refer to a bishop's church, but derives from the French word "dôme" for dome. During World War II, the building suffered severe damage, with the dome burning out in 1944. Between 1978 and 1983, the exterior was faithfully reconstructed, while the interior was modernized. Since 1935, the cathedral has housed the Huguenot Museum.
