St. Afra

First mentioned in a document in 1271, St. Afra Convent, named after Afra of Augsburg, had existed for some time prior. It was originally founded as a Beguinage to serve as a nursing facility for the staff of the cathedral chapter. Following the dissolution of German Beguinages by the Council of Vienne in 1311, the nuns joined the Third Order of St. Francis. Between 1713 and 1728, the medieval building was replaced by a new construction, with the convent church consecrated as early as 1724. Archbishop Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony dissolved the convent in 1785, converting it into an orphanage for girls. After its complete secularization in 1806, the property became private and served as a girls' school for the Protestant community from 1851 to 1879.

The remnants of St. Afra Convent are located in Liebfrauenstraße in Trier, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

At house number 5, the enclosing walls of the three-story Baroque convent buildings from the early 18th century are still visible. A striking gateway with a broken pediment from 1728 dominates the streetscape. Above the entrance, there is a figural niche and aedicule. The preserved complex consists of two right-angled, three-story wings. The former church, a hall building constructed between 1721 and 1724 according to plans by Odericus Weiler, stands at house number 6. The church was converted into a warehouse as early as 1809 and modified accordingly. The facade of the church building is structured by pilasters beneath a massive entablature. Today, the building houses a toy store.
