The origins of Zwillbrock Monastery date back to its founding in 1657. Initially, the monastery was dedicated to several saints, including the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Francis, Saint Joseph, and Saint Plechelm. Over time, presumably around 1748, the patronage focused solely on Saint Francis. For more than 150 years, it served as a center of activity for the Franciscans until its dissolution in 1811 as part of the secularization process.
