Franziskaner-Klosterkirche

The exact founding year of the monastery is not recorded, but it existed before 1242. Around 1250, the monastery church was built in the typical style of a mendicant order church. A papal mention of the monastery dates to 1266. By 1335, the complex was large enough to host the provincial chapter of the Saxon Franciscan Province. In the 15th century, the Zeitz convent adopted the Martinian Constitutions, a moderate direction within the Observant movement. In 1517, the monastery housed 28 Franciscans. Its dissolution occurred in 1541 as a result of the Reformation by Duke Johann Friedrich of Saxony.

The former monastic complex is situated in the south of the historic city of Zeitz, nestled in the Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is located along the former city wall, which was typical for the construction of many Franciscan monasteries in the 13th century.

After its dissolution, the monastery served various purposes: Martin Luther preached in the church in 1542, and from 1564, the buildings housed a municipal Latin school, which later became the Stiftsgymnasium. Since 2007, the complex has undergone extensive renovation and is now used as a concert church. An evangelical primary school plans to move into the premises.
