The monastery was founded in 1702 by Franciscans of the Bavarian Franciscan Province, with construction overseen by Philipp Plank. Initially conceived as a hospice, it developed into a full convent around 1706/1707. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1802 and subsequently served as a so-called extinction monastery for the Discalced Carmelites from Munich until 1817. After a period of private rental from 1817 to 1828, the complex was eventually sold. From 1844, the Brothers of Mercy established a hospital here. The baroque Guardian Angel Church, which once belonged to the monastery, became a filial church in 1817 and the parish church of St. Peter in 1912. From 1996, the city of Straubing used the former monastery buildings as an educational center for the adult education college. Since 2000, a gradual expansion for the Straubing Science Center has taken place, which took over and redesigned the entire monastery buildings (excluding the church) from mid-2013. In 2015, a refectory and a modern lecture hall in the former refectory were officially inaugurated.
