Franziskanerkloster Neunburg vorm Wald

The former Franciscan Monastery Neunburg vorm Wald, a protected historical monument in Bavaria, is a significant site in Schwandorf, Germany. It is particularly known as the founding house of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
History+
Dedicated to Saint Francis Seraphicus, the Franciscan monastery was established in 1722. Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria initiated its foundation at the request of the citizens of Neunburg. The Bachmayer family, whose son later became the monastery's first guardian, provided their house for the initial hospice. From 1725, the hospice developed into a full convent. The Franciscans initially used St. Jakob's cemetery church and a former cavalry barracks as their monastic buildings. A new monastery church was completed by 1725. The convent grew considerably, comprising sixteen fathers and nine lay brothers by 1762. The monastery also operated a brewery and assisted the parish priest with pastoral duties. In 1802, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization in Bavaria. The monks were required to leave the town before dawn, and the monastic buildings and church were sold. The church's chancel was separated and repurposed, while parts of the choir were converted into a pharmacy. Later, several monastery buildings were demolished.
