Franziskanerkloster

The Franciscan Monastery in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, stands as a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture within the Mecklenburg Lake District. It is notable for its well-preserved historical building fabric, particularly the refectory and the former monastery church of St. John.
History+
The Franciscans settled in Neubrandenburg around 1260, likely as part of the city's foundation around 1248 under Margrave Johann I. Margrave Otto III. is considered the founder. The convent belonged to the Custody of Stettin within the Saxon monastic province. A provincial chapter of the order convened in Neubrandenburg as early as 1285, serving as the earliest written evidence of the monastery's existence. Around 1270, the dormitory, the eastern wing of the cloister quadrangle, may have been constructed. The north wing, housing the refectory, was built around 1300 and modified in the 14th century, gaining a second floor, and largely remains intact today. The original fieldstone church from 1260 was replaced in the 1320s by a two-aisled brick building. Following a city fire in 1355, which severely damaged the monastery buildings, the complex was rebuilt as a two-courtyard facility. The monastery received patronage from regional nobility and the citizenry and continued to exist until the introduction of the Reformation in Mecklenburg.
