Franziskanerkloster Löbau

The Franciscan Monastery in Löbau was founded in the early 14th century, likely after 1320. The first documented mention of the monastery dates back to 1336, when it received a forest donation. Dedicated to the Holy Cross, the monastery was part of the Goldberg Custody of the Saxon Franciscan Province. It existed until the mid-16th century and was dissolved between 1562 and 1564 during the Reformation. The monastery buildings were subsequently handed over to the city of Löbau.

The former monastery grounds are situated in the eastern part of Löbau's old town, within the Görlitz district of Saxony. The complex was strategically positioned near the city wall, with parts of the monastic buildings directly integrated into the town's fortifications.

Of the original convent buildings of the Franciscan Monastery, no above-ground remains are preserved today. The former monastery church, also known as St. John's Church since 1666/67, has been deconsecrated and now functions as a cultural center for the city of Löbau.
