Franziskanerkloster Limburg

The Franciscan monastery in Limburg was founded around 1232 when members of the mendicant order settled there. An initial wooden church was used in 1252 before a new stone monastery church, now the city church, was built in the early 14th century, made possible by donations from Limburg's citizenry. In the 15th century, the Limburg Franciscans joined the stricter Observant movement and transferred their property to the Archbishop of Trier in 1458. The Reformation led to a temporary closure between 1577 and 1582. In the 17th century, the monastery experienced a boom, acquiring surrounding lands and operating a Latin school, a brewery, and a textile factory. The monastery was finally closed in 1813 during secularization. The church was declared the city church in 1820, and from 1827, the monastery buildings served the newly founded Diocese of Limburg as the bishop's residence and diocesan administration.

The former monastery church is now the city church of Limburg. The former monastery buildings have been used by the Diocese of Limburg as the bishop's residence and for diocesan administration since 1827. The building complex, which largely acquired its current form between 1737 and 1743, integrates elements of the medieval cloister and Baroque alterations. Two Gothic rib vaults, presumably part of the medieval brewery, are still preserved on the ground floor. Various medieval and Baroque furnishings, as well as an 18th-century marbled main staircase, can be found inside. A high relief of Saint George on horseback by Arnold Hensler from 1932 adorns the courtyard entrance.
