Franziskanerkloster Korbach

The monastery was founded in 1487 by the Counts Philipp II of Waldeck-Eisenberg, Heinrich VIII of Waldeck-Wildungen, and Otto IV of Waldeck-Landau. The intention to establish the monastery was declared on July 9, 1487, in Korbach, and construction of the monastery church began in the same year. The friars residing here belonged to the Cologne Province of the Order and adhered to the Observant movement, characterized by a strict interpretation of the monastic rules. Following the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Waldeck in 1526, a lengthy process of the monastery's dissolution began. Despite calls to preach the Lutheran catechism, the Franciscans resisted. It was not until 1566, after a dispute between Guardian Kaspar Nagel and Protestant preachers and the town community, that the friars were forced to leave the monastery. A later attempt in 1628 to reclaim the monastery by imperial order failed due to the resistance of the counts.

The former Franciscan monastery was situated in the town of Korbach, which is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district of Hesse, Germany.

After its dissolution, the monastery was initially used by the town of Korbach for a civic school. From 1579, the buildings housed a humanistic grammar school, later known as the "Alte Landesschule" gymnasium. The original monastery buildings were largely destroyed in July 1760 during the Seven Years' War. Between 1770 and 1774, a new school building, the "Fridericianum," was erected on the foundations of the former monastery church. Today, the expanded premises on Klosterstraße house other institutions, after the gymnasium moved to new buildings in 1971.
