Franziskanerkloster Koblenz

The Franciscan Monastery of Koblenz, a historic monastic complex in the old town of Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, was once a significant institution of the Franciscan Order. It was founded in the early 13th century and experienced a varied history before being secularized in the 19th century and later used as a hospital. Today, only minor remnants of the original complex remain.
History+
The Franciscans settled in Koblenz at the beginning of the 13th century. The first documented mention of the monastery dates to 1236, suggesting that the construction of the church and monastic buildings began around this time. By 1250, parts of the complex were habitable. The monastery church was an asymmetrical, two-aisled hall with ribbed vaults, complemented by a rectangular cloister on the south side. In the 14th century, the monastery aligned with the moderate Conventuals but switched to the stricter Observant movement in the mid-15th century. After its destruction during the siege of Koblenz in 1688, the monastery was rebuilt between 1693 and 1696. In 1802, it was secularized by the French revolutionary army. From 1805, the complex was converted into a hospital, which served as the Bürgerhospital until 1923 and is considered the precursor to today's Kemperhof hospital. Later, it was used as a retirement home.
