Kieler Kloster

Shortly after the founding of Kiel in 1242, the Franciscan monastery was established and assigned to the Dacia province of the Franciscan Order. It was dedicated to Mary. Adolf IV of Schauenburg, the founder, later joined the order himself and was buried in the monastery church after his death in 1261. In 1480, the Kiel Franciscans adopted the Martinian Constitutions, which signified a return to the order's ideal of poverty. In 1503, observance was introduced in the convent. The monastery belonged to the Custody of Holstein and was incorporated into the Saxon Franciscan Province of Saxonia in 1520. During the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved by Frederick I of Denmark in 1530. The buildings subsequently housed a city school and later the Heiliggeist Hospital. In 1665, the monastery became the founding site of Kiel University. Due to the poor condition of the premises, the university moved to the neighboring castle in 1766, and large parts of the monastery were demolished. The monastery church then served as a garrison church and later as a university church. During World War II, the buildings were destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944. After the war, it was rebuilt as the Theological Study House Kiel Monastery, which was inaugurated in 1950. In the 1980s, the dormitory also opened to students from other faculties and to female students. Between 1994 and 1998, the monastery was restored, and its historic rooms have since been used for public events.

The Franciscan Monastery Kiel is located in the city of Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, the former monastery houses the Theological Study House Kiel Monastery, operated by an association. Parts of the historic premises, such as the former refectory and a wing of the cloister, are used for exhibitions and concerts. A concert carillon is located in the simplified rebuilt tower of the monastery church. A monument to the city founder Adolf IV of Schauenburg is erected near the monastery, and during the summer months, a monastery café operates in the garden.
