Franciscan Monastery Kadaň

The origins of the monastery date back to 1469, when a chapel was first mentioned at this site. In 1473, the first Franciscans settled here and began constructing provisional buildings. A three-nave church was consecrated in 1480 and later served as the burial place for the Lords of Lobkowicz. The monastery's development was hindered by the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, leading to restoration work in the second half of the 17th century. During the Josephine Reforms in 1785, the monastery narrowly escaped dissolution. After a largely peaceful 19th century, the monastery was used by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. In 1950, the convent was dissolved and only after the political changes from 1991 to 1994 was it briefly revived by Franciscans. Subsequently, the building passed to the Diocese of Litoměřice, which leased it to the city of Kadaň in 1995. The city initiated extensive renovations and established the Municipal Museum within the premises.

The monastery is situated in the city of Kadaň in the Ústecký kraj, a region in northwestern Czech Republic. It stands at an elevation of approximately 328 meters above sea level.

Today, the former monastery houses the Municipal Museum of Kadaň. In addition to permanent exhibitions, visitors are offered guided tours through the historic buildings. The monastery is protected as a National Cultural Monument.
