Franziskanerkloster (Halberstadt)
The Franciscan Monastery in Halberstadt, one of the earliest foundations of the order in Germany, stands as a historical testament to religious life in the Harz region. It was consecrated to Saint Andrew and survived the Reformation before being dissolved in the early 19th century.
History+
The Franciscans established their settlement in Halberstadt around 1223, during the lifetime of the order's founder, Francis of Assisi. This makes it one of the first convents of the order in Germany. Despite the turmoil of the Reformation, the monastery persisted. It was officially dissolved in 1810 as a result of secularization. In 1920, Franciscans returned to Halberstadt, revitalizing the tradition on Franziskanerstrasse. This later establishment, belonging to the German Franciscan Province, was, however, closed in 2020 due to a lack of new recruits.

The monastery is located in Halberstadt, a city in Saxony-Anhalt, situated on the northern edge of the Harz mountains. Its elevation above sea level is approximately 134 meters.
