Franziskanerkloster Greifswald

The monastery of the Franciscan Order was founded on June 29, 1262. A property in Greifswald was donated by the Counts of Gützkow for this purpose, with the aim of creating a dignified burial place for their family. This foundation likely took place twelve years after Greifswald was granted Lübeck law. The monastery belonged to the Stettin Custody of the Saxon Franciscan Province. From the early 14th century, the Franciscan convent frequently appeared as a witness in charters and privileges for the Greifswald Council. The city sought to control the acquisition of land by the monasteries, and for a tower with a latrine, approved for the monastery on the city wall in 1305, the city council reserved jurisdiction. Werner Hilgemann, from a leading Greifswald council family, was the first named Guardian around 1330. His family endowed the reconstruction of the choir of the monastery church in 1348.

The monastery was situated southeast of Greifswald's market square and extended to the city wall in Vorpommern-Greifswald, a region within the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany.

Of the original medieval building fabric of the monastery, the building of the monastery library, known as the Guardianshaus, remains today. The former monastery grounds now house, among other things, the Pomeranian State Museum.
