Franziskanerkloster Fritzlar

Following the destruction of Fritzlar in 1232, the Franciscans received permission to establish a monastery in 1236. By 1237, the order had acquired a plot of land within the city walls. The monastery was consecrated in 1244. It belonged to the Cologne Franciscan Province and later joined the Conventual branch. Construction of the monastery church, a two-aisled Gothic hall church, was completed in the early 14th century. This church, considered a significant edifice in the city, was built concurrently with parts of Fritzlar Cathedral. There was a brief interruption in the monastery's existence during the Reformation, but it persisted until 1811. In 1658, the high altar was re-consecrated. In the 19th century, the Baroque altars were removed, though a Nepomuk high altar from 1735 remained in the choir. A Marian fresco from around 1330 and a relief of Saint Veronica's Veil from around 1500 are other historical artworks within the church.

The monastery is situated in the eastern part of Fritzlar's old town, a city in the Schwalm-Eder district of Hesse, Germany. The complex once stretched from the current Gießener Straße to the Jordansturm and encompassed the area between the eastern city wall and Brüdergasse.

The former monastery church has been used as the Protestant city church since 1824. The other monastery buildings were converted into a hospital over time, which has been expanded and modernized multiple times. Despite extensive renovations since the 18th century, the original scale of the monastery complex is still discernible.
