The Franciscan Monastery of Flensburg, also known under the patronage of Saint Catherine, was a significant spiritual institution in the city of Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. From its foundation in the 13th century until the Reformation, it shaped the religious and cultural life of the region, and remnants of it are still visible today.
History+
The Franciscan monastery in Flensburg was founded either between 1232 and 1233 or before 1263. It belonged to the Franciscan Order, also known as Grey Friars or barefoot friars. The monastery played an important role in spreading high medieval spiritual life and a new style of pastoral care in Flensburg. In 1269, it hosted the first chapter of the newly established Franciscan province of Dacia. Towards the end of the 15th century, in 1496, the Observants prevailed within the monastery, which meant a stricter adherence to the original monastic rules and the renunciation of possessions. The monastery's existence ended in 1528 with its dissolution and secularization during the Reformation.

The Franciscan monastery was located in the city of Flensburg, which lies in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. The remains of the monastery can still be found today behind Südermarkt, near Rote Straße.
