Engelberg Abbey

The origins of Engelberg date back to pre-Christian times, when it served as a pagan cult site. Around 1300, a simple wooden chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael was erected on the mountain. A statue of Mary, added around 1310, became a revered image of grace, attracting pilgrims. The pilgrimage to Engelberg, first documented in 1406, flourished. In 1630, Archbishop Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt of Mainz invited the Capuchins to the mountain to build a monastery and a church. The Capuchins managed the pilgrimage until the secularization in 1803, when the monastery was dissolved. By order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, the monastery was re-established by Franciscans in 1828. In 2024, the Oblates of Saint Joseph took over the establishment.

The Engelberg Monastery is located in Miltenberg, Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 249 meters above sea level. It is situated on a spur of the Spessart mountains high above Großheubach.

Today, the monastery is a destination for numerous pilgrims and tourists. It is known for its dark beer, served in the monastery tavern. The monastery church is built in the style of a mendicant order church and houses chapels dedicated to the veneration of Mary and Saint Anthony of Padua. The western facade of the church is adorned with a sculpture of the Archangel Michael.
