Franziskanerkloster Cottbus

The Franciscan Monastery in Cottbus was founded around 1290 or 1300, though the exact year is not recorded. It is believed that Fredehelm von Cottbus and his wife Adelheid acted as founders of the convent. The monastery belonged to the Custody of Meissen within the Saxon Order Province and served as an important base for the Franciscans in the region. In 1489, the Cottbus convent joined the Observant movement, which advocated for a stricter interpretation of the monastic rules. A highlight in the monastery's history was the Provincial Chapter of Saxonia, which took place here in 1507. With the introduction of the Reformation by Margrave Johann von Küstrin in 1537, the Franciscan Monastery was dissolved, and the friars were forced to leave the premises.

The former Franciscan Monastery is located in the city of Cottbus in Brandenburg, Germany. It was strategically situated in the northwestern corner of historic Cottbus.

Of the former monastic complex, primarily the monastery church has been preserved. Since the Reformation, it has served as an Evangelical parish church and was for a long time a center for Sorbian services. The church is a simple, elongated rectangular brick building, typical of mendicant orders, with a distinctive tower at the southeast corner. The former monastery buildings, which were located on the north side of the church, have largely disappeared; only the sacristy still bears witness to the original structure.
