Franziskanerkloster Bautzen

The Franciscan Monastery of Bautzen, founded around 1240, was a significant convent of the Franciscan Order in Upper Lusatia. Although today only the ruins of the monastery church, known as the Monks' Church, and a section of a refectory wall remain, these vestiges bear witness to the former grandeur and importance of this complex.
History+
The earliest documented mention of the monastery appears in a papal bull from 1248, granting indulgences for the construction of the church and other buildings. Its founding around 1240 occurred during a period of rapid expansion for the Franciscan Order across Europe. Initially, the Bautzen convent belonged to the Bohemian ecclesiastical province and even served as the principal monastery of its own custodies. However, due to ongoing national tensions, the monastery was permanently reassigned to the Saxon Franciscan Province from 1274 onwards. The provincial chapter of the Saxon Franciscans convened in Bautzen approximately ten times before the monastery's dissolution in 1562.
Location+
The monastery complex was situated in Bautzen, a city in Saxony, Germany. The site stretched between Große Brüdergasse to the north and Heringstraße (formerly Judengasse) to the south, bordered by Hohengasse and Mönchsgasse. It was strategically positioned in close proximity to the secular and ecclesiastical centers of power in Upper Lusatia, such as Ortenburg Castle and Bautzen Cathedral Chapter.
On site+
Today, only the ruins of the monastery church, known as the Monks' Church, and one wall of the refectory remain from the once extensive monastic complex. Archaeological investigations since the early 20th century have aided in reconstructing the monastery's layout, including its cloister, chapter house, and other structures.
