The presence of Franciscans in Bamberg is documented as early as 1223, with their first monastery likely located in the northern part of the city. In 1311, the Franciscans took over the former buildings of the dissolved Knights Templar order at the Schranne, directly on the Regnitz river. The rebuilt monastery church was consecrated to Saint Anna in 1374. The friars served as chaplains, confessors for the cathedral chapter and other collegiate foundations, and as preachers in Bamberg and the surrounding area. Due to their popularity, the monastery, which belonged to the Upper German or Strasbourg Province, achieved a certain prosperity. The Observant reform movement faced resistance within the convent in the 15th century. Between approximately 1460 and 1475, Stephan Fridolin, one of Bamberg's most renowned Franciscans, was active in this monastery. In 1625, the Bavarian Custody was established as an independent Franciscan province of the Reformats, but the Bamberg monastery remained with the Strasbourg Province. Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn approved a new construction of the convent buildings in 1716, with the foundation stone laid in 1718 and the buildings consecrated in 1719. During the secularization in Bavaria, the monastery was dissolved in 1806. The monastery church was demolished in 1810/1811. Some of the monastery's inventory, including the cross altar and the tombstone of Auxiliary Bishop Inzelerius, was preserved. The buildings subsequently served various purposes, including as a barracks, police station, and district court.

The former Franciscan Monastery is situated in the Upper Franconian city of Bamberg in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany.

Following extensive renovations starting in 1976, the former monastery buildings have been utilized by state offices since 1991. Today, they house the Office for Digitization, Broadband and Surveying Bamberg, the Bamberg-Schranne police station, and the Upper Franconia regional representation of Immobilien Freistaat Bayern.
