Franciscan Abbey

The monastery, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was founded in 1628 by Heinrich von Knoeringen, then Prince-Bishop of Augsburg, and Abbot Martin of St. Mang. The first Franciscans initially occupied the former Jesuit chapel and later the Church of St. Stephen, which served as a parish church until the 13th century. Construction of the monastery building began in 1629, and the church underwent extensive renovations in the following years. At the bishop's request, the Franciscans took over preaching at the parish masses in the monastery church of St. Mang. In 1632, the newly built monastery suffered damage during the passage of Swedish troops, necessitating extensive renovations. Over time, the complex was expanded, including a brewery in 1662 and a brandy distillery in 1695. A second monastery wing was added from 1712. Between 1763 and 1767, the Church of St. Stephen was rebuilt. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803 and initially passed into the possession of the Teutonic Order before being transferred to the state in 1805.

The Franciscan Monastery is situated in Füssen in the Ostallgäu, a region in Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 802 meters above sea level.

The monastery complex is bordered to the east and south by the historic town wall. The monastery building itself is a two-winged structure connected to the monastery church. The Church of St. Stephen, a new construction from the 18th century, has a simple exterior and houses a Rococo interior. The monastery garden is designed in the Baroque style and features a fountain basin.
