Franziskanerinnenkloster Memmingen

The convent was founded in 1444 by two sisters from a hermitage in Leutkirch. As the community grew, the sisters acquired a property opposite the Frauenkirche. Between 1467 and 1470, it was expanded into a complete convent complex, which included its own chapel, a small cloister, cells, and an inner courtyard. A notable feature was the passage to the Frauenkirche. During the Reformation, the sisters left the city but returned during the Interim and regained their convent building, which had temporarily been used as a Latin school. In 1736, the convent acquired an adjacent building, which was leased as an inn and gave its name to today's Pfluggasse. The number of nuns, also known as Gray Sisters due to their habit, remained relatively constant at around twenty until the secularization. After the dissolution of the convent, the building served as a hospital and later as a poorhouse and almshouse.

The former Franciscan Convent is located in the city of Memmingen in Bavarian Upper Swabia.

The historic building is currently used as the Bürgerstift retirement home and is owned by the Unterhospitalstiftung. Artworks from the convent's active period are still preserved in the former convent chapel.
